“The ‘Ice Crystal Sampler’ was a mystery quilt block challenge from the National Quilters Circle website. I had dabbled with paper piecing in the past but was always frustrated with the process. When this challenge popped up on my Facebook page, I decided to give it a try, hoping that it would give me more confidence with paper piecing. I did, in the end, learn a lot and became comfortable with the process; however I must confess it is not my most favorite method of quilting.

The mystery challenge was a 6-week series. The only criteria I had was that all fabrics were to come from my stash. In week 1, I received the fabric requirements and the pattern for block 1. Every week thereafter, I received the patterns for 2 more blocks with each block becoming progressively harder and more complicated. At the end of 5 weeks, all 9 blocks were completed. In week 6, I received the finishing instructions. Since I wanted the quilt to be larger than the original 58” x 58”, I did add the additional borders.”
