DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a farmer? Junior Farmer Camp is designed to help kids\, ages 7-10 (entering grades 2-5)\, discover for themselves by stepping into a farmer’s shoes for a week. \nThe majority of our camp activities will be held outside where campers can maintain social distance. This year we will offer outdoor animal chores with the sheep\, goats\, chickens\, and heifers\, tractor-drawn wagon rides\, games\, gardening\, crafts\, and cooking. We will take advantage of the adjacent National Historical Park for hiking and learn about Vermont’s natural history. Junior Farmer Camp is designed to help kids\, ages 7-10 (entering grades 2-5)\, discover for themselves by stepping into a farmer’s shoes for a week. \nThe majority of our camp activities will be held outside where campers can maintain social distance. DESCRIPTION:Join the Billings Bookworms! From July 12 through August 16\, kids ages 6-8 are invited to Billings Farm & Museum each week to read about and explore a farm-themed topic. This is not just a book club! There are activities and crafts each week and Bookworms get to experience all the site has to offer. \nBillings Bookworms Week 5: Justin Morgan and the Big Horse Race  \n10-10:30 Book reading and exploration. Bookworms will listen to an educator read Justin Morgan and The Big Horse Race by Ellen F. Feld. Each Bookworm will pick a passage and write or draw about it and have the chance to share with the group. \n10:30-10:45 Snack time. Snack will be provided by Billings Farm & Museum. During snack time\, we’ll listen to a chapter of Good Dog: Herd You Loud and Clear by Cam Higgins and Ariel Landy\, which is about a young herding dog working to bring in the sheep. DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be part of a farming community? Farm Discovery Camp is a hands-on program for young people\, ages 11-14 (rising 6th-9th graders)\, who want a deeper understanding of farming and all that it encompasses. \nAt Farm Discovery Camp you will meet local professionals and farmers who are leaders in their fields — the Billings Dairy Farm Manager\, local beekeepers\, and a large animal veterinarian. Work alongside our farmers to learn the ins and outs of dairy production. Take part in a local service project — at Billings Farm or in the Woodstock community and make a lasting difference. Along the way\, you will gain an awareness of the many ways our food systems and our ecosystems are interconnected. You will have the chance to: \n• Experience the daily rhythms of farming and learn firsthand how farmers make decisions about caring for the herd and the land\n• Make farm-fresh food including homemade ricotta cheese and ice cream with Billings Farm’s jersey cow milk\n• Meet farmers in our community and learn how to care for a calf\, raise bees\, and more\n• Try fiber arts such as felting wool from Billings Farm sheep\n• Explore the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park with a park ranger\n• Make an impact on the farm and in the community with organized service projects \nFarm Discovery Camp: Session Two runs from August 2-August 6.
