Woodstock Vermont Film Series: Citizen Ashe Explores Legacy of Tennis Great & Humanitarian, Arthur Ashe Screening at Billings Farm & Museum Jan. 14 & 15
Athlete. Activist. Champion. The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will present Citizen Ashe with showings on Saturday, January 14 and Sunday, January 15 at 3:00PM.
This tribute to an extraordinary life explores the legacy of tennis great and humanitarian, Arthur Ashe. The film charts his personal evolution from being the first major Black tennis star to becoming a global activist. His quiet determination and gentility emanated change from within the sport of tennis and through his involvement in the civil rights movement, his actions to counter South African apartheid, and his activism in the face of the stigma of AIDS.

Saturday’s screening will be followed by a discussion with former professional tennis player and prominent tennis historian, Art Carrington, and Film Series curator, Jay Craven. Carrington wrote “Black Tennis: An Archival Collection Between 1890 and 1962,” a historical look the American Tennis Association and the pioneer period for African American tennis at large. Involved in the game for more than five decades, Carrington runs the Arthur Carrington Tennis Academy in Amherst, Mass., teaching some of the highest-ranked juniors in both New England and the entire nation.
The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will screen documentary films weekly on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00PM in the Billings Farm & Museum Visitor Center Theater through February 19.
