The warmth, energy, and delicious food of the Big Easy is coming to Billings Farm & Museum just in time for Mardi Gras!  The Music, Film & Food Soiree on Saturday, February 18 will feature a fabulous film, live New Orleans-inspired jazz, specialty cocktails from the bayou, and delicious low-country cooking.  This lively evening in quiet Woodstock is not to be missed! 

The fun starts at 3:00PM with a screening of Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story presented by the Woodstock Vermont Film Series. The documentary celebrates the music, food, community, and rich heritage of New Orleans.  Weaving together live performances and interviews from the 50th anniversary festival, the film features some of the biggest names in the music industry, and a wealth of archival footage from the past half century.  

There will be fun to follow with specialty cocktails by Vermont Spirits Distilling Co, featuring the vibrant, botanical-infused, and fizzy delight of Coppers French 75 and the official cocktail of Louisiana, No. 14 Sazerac.  Once a mid-19th century cure-all developed by a local pharmacist, Sazerac is the Big Easy way to start the evening out right. For a lighter imbibe, beer and wine will be available as well. 

With a drink in hand, guests can revel in the live New Orleans-inspired jazz from local virtuosos Michael Zsoldos on saxophone and Ben Kogan on stand-up bass and vocals.  With a nod to the birthplace of jazz, their playful tunes will liven up the atmosphere in the Billings Farm historic barn.  

The delicious aroma of Cajan cooking will be hard to resist.  With a formative background in southern cuisine, Chef Jason Schmidtke of No Reservations Vermont, brings the quintessential taste of Louisiana to Billings Farm & Museum. 

Guests can warm their belly and sooth their souls with a rich and aromatic Gumbo featuring key ingredients sourced straight out of New Orleans — crawfish for the daring — and andouille sausage. To compliment the authentic flavor of culture in a cup, Billings Farm’s own Chef Emery Gray will serve muffuletta and a dessert of monkey bread topped by a choice of Bananas Foster or a drizzle of bourbon chocolate sauce.

Step into the shoes of a farmer, meet the animals, connect stories to activities, and experience the wonder of winter at Billings Farm & Museum farm camps.  In both winter and summer, the week-long day camps provide engaging, hands-on explorations of the farm and the local landscape, while teaching campers about caring for animals and the relationship between the food systems and ecosystem. Winter Wonders Camp, February 20 – 24, 9:00AM – 12:30PM  

For ages 6-8 or grades 1-3 

This unique winter camp is full of “fun”tastic activities such as snow and wildlife explorations, sledding and winter crafts, and a chance to meet some of the farm’s animals and find out what they do in wintertime.   

Some of the winter activities may include a nature scavenger hunt in the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, making popcorn over a campfire, and lots of outdoor playtime.  Campers can warm up in the cozy Learning Kitchen and learn how to bake cookies, make marshmallows from scratch, and more.  There will be crafts and creative building activities such as constructing a bird feeder, making fiber arts projects, and experimenting with oobleck.  Billingsfarm.org/winter-wonders-camp   

Billings Bookworms Camp, Session 1: July 17 – 21; Session 2: August 14 – 18, 9:00AM – 12:30PM   

Ages 6-8 or entering grades 1-3  

This imaginative half-day camp is tailored for the younger farm enthusiast.  Campers will listen to fun stories about farming, nature, and animals then meet the farm’s calves, sheep, chickens, and goats.  Each day will include a theme that connects stories to hands-on activities throughout the site. Explorations throughout the week will take campers through the Farmstead Gardens and on exciting scavenger hunts all over the Billing’s property and the forests in Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Junior Farmer Camp, Session 1: June 19 – 23; Session 2: June 26 – 30; Session 3: July 24 – 28; Session 4: July 31 – August 4, 9:00AM – 4:00PM 

Ages 7-10 or entering grades 2-5 

Junior Farmer Camp is as hands-on as it gets. Campers will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the farm’s cows, horses, chickens, and sheep while learning the work that goes into the food we eat. In addition to daily farm chores and activities, the campers will explore farming topics like dairy, gardening, tractors, and draft animals. Some of the fun camp activities include taking a hayride through the farm fields, a pizza party with garden fresh ingredients, scavenger hunts around the farm, and tie dyeing a Junior Farmer Camp t-shirt. Farm Discovery Camp, Session 1: July 10 – 14; Session 2: August 7 – 11, 9:00AM – 4:00PM 

Ages 11-14 or entering grades 6-9 

For a chance to delve deep into what it means to be a farmer, this camp explores the ins and outs of a working dairy farm and the aspects of being part of a farming community.  Campers can experience the daily rhythms of the farm, learn to care for the animals and land, and broaden their understanding of the farming industry and all it encompasses.  Campers will meet local professionals and farmers who are leaders in their fields including the Billings Dairy Farm Manager and a large animal veterinarian. Through an array of hands-on experiences, campers will gain an awareness of the many ways that food systems and ecosystems are interconnected. Billingsfarm.org/farm-discovery-camp/

An escape into art, a composition of contraband, and forged connections with fellow artists in an incarcerated community.  The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will present Art & Krimes by Krimes with showings on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29 at 3:00PM.    

While locked-up for six years in federal prison, artist Jesse Krimes secretly creates monumental works of art—including an astonishing 40-foot mural made with prison bed sheets, hair gel, and newspaper. He smuggles out each panel piece-by-piece with the help of fellow artists, only seeing the mural in totality upon coming home.  

This documentary provides a hard look at the broken culture within the criminal justice system and explores the power of art as a pathway to normalcy, healing, and freedom.  The film celebrates the transcendent power of art to connect us and elevate the human spirit through any circumstance.

This spare and quiet documentary directed by Emelie Mahdavian, conjures powerful emotion and a rare glimpse into the life of two cattlewomen.  A portrait of friendship, life transitions, and hard work, Hollyn Patterson, and Colie Moline spend the season herding cattle off the mountain range in the isolated and beautiful landscape of the American West. 

The showings will be followed by a recorded Q&A between Emmy and Academy Award nominated producer of Bitterbrush, Su Kim, and the film series curator, Jay Craven.

Billings Farm & Museum is open January 14 – 16, 10:00am – 4:00PM for Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend. Visitors of all ages can enjoy thoughtful reflection on King’s legacy and engaging activities indoors and out during the long weekend.  

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Museum will air A Time for Justice, the 38-minute award-winning documentary film by Charles Guggenheim that captures the spirit of the civil rights movement.  The film will be shown daily and included with admission. Showings on Saturday and Sunday will conclude at 1:00PM.  

King opened doors in various sectors of our society for African Americans to ascend – to become role models and find new opportunities to express themselves broadly.  One American who gained this new opportunity was tennis star Arthur Ashe. The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will present Citizen Ashe with showings on Saturday, January 14 and Sunday, January 15 at 3:00PM in the Visitor Center Theater.  This tribute to an extraordinary life explores Ashe’s legacy as a tennis great and humanitarian. The film charts his personal evolution from being the first major Black tennis star to becoming a global activist.  

Saturday’s screening will be followed by a discussion with former professional tennis player and prominent tennis historian, Art Carrington, and Film Series curator, Jay Craven. Carrington wrote “Black Tennis: An Archival Collection Between 1890 and 1962,” a historical look the American Tennis Association and the pioneer period for African American tennis at large. Family activities for the holiday weekend include creating a dove of peace paper craft and going on a scavenger hunt in the Farm Life Exhibits.  There will be a Children’s Storytime at 1:00PM and Education Programs including a Butter Program at 12:00PM and Victorian Flower Language at 3:00PM. Guests can also stop by the barns to Meet a Jersey Cow at 11:00AM and 2:00PM and see the daily milking at 3:15PM.  Weather permitting, guests can step outside into the snow-covered landscape for a light snowshoe or ski along the Ottauquechee River.  Warmed by the crackling outdoor fire, guests can enjoy roasted s’mores and hot cocoa, available for purchase.

Athlete. Activist. Champion.  The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will present Citizen Ashe with showings on Saturday, January 14 and Sunday, January 15 at 3:00PM.    

This tribute to an extraordinary life explores the legacy of tennis great and humanitarian, Arthur Ashe.  The film charts his personal evolution from being the first major Black tennis star to becoming a global activist.  His quiet determination and gentility emanated change from within the sport of tennis and through his involvement in the civil rights movement, his actions to counter South African apartheid, and his activism in the face of the stigma of AIDS. 

“(Ashe) embraced the role of pioneer and resolved to use his new platform to join the fight that had been swirling around him.” -William C. Rhoden, New York Times 

Saturday’s screening will be followed by a discussion with former professional tennis player and prominent tennis historian, Art Carrington, and Film Series curator, Jay Craven. Carrington wrote “Black Tennis: An Archival Collection Between 1890 and 1962,” a historical look the American Tennis Association and the pioneer period for African American tennis at large. Involved in the game for more than five decades, Carrington runs the Arthur Carrington Tennis Academy in Amherst, Mass., teaching some of the highest-ranked juniors in both New England and the entire nation.

Adventures abound at Billings Farm & Museum in February, when guests can explore the Vermont landscape by moonlight during a Torchlight Snowshoe or from a daytime horse-drawn sleigh ride through the fields. Romance can bloom while cooking with a loved one or celebrating with friends in a pre-Mardi Gras Music, Film & Food Soiree. This short month is packed with excitement! 

The Automat, Woodstock Vermont Film Series, February 4 & 5

The Automat recounts the lost history of the iconic restaurant chain Horn & Hardart, featuring interviews with Mel Brooks, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Colin Powell, and other famous fans. Date Night Cooking Class, February 13, 5:00PM – 7:30PM 

Love is in the air!  With Valentine’s Day around the corner, couples can get a head start with a fun cooking class led by Chef Emery Gray.  The menu will feature three delicious and sharable courses starting with a creative crostini appetizer, followed by a fondue for two using Billings Farm Butter and Woodstock Reserve Cheddar Cheeses.  The melted decadence will be paired with dippable meats, breads, and pickled vegetables.  The evening will conclude with light and fluffy chocolate mousse, chilled to perfection.  Participants will learn knife skills, stirring and aeration techniques, and how to balance texture and flavor throughout the menu.  For Ages 21+. $190/couple, $170/members. Magic of Maple, February 18 – 26, 10:00AM – 4:00PM

Torchlight Snowshoe, February 24, 4:30PM – 6:30PM   

In this wintry, after-hours adventure, Billings Farm & Museum guests can walk, snowshoe, or ski around the Billings Farm loop illuminated by torchlight.  The trail meanders along the Ottauquechee River with views of Woodstock, the East End Park, and the beautiful farmstead. Guests can meet Billings Farm Educators and National Park Rangers from the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park to learn about local wildlife, the history of the land, and the people who lived here.  Families and friends can warm up by the crackling outdoor fire with complimentary s’mores, hot cocoa, and coffee.  A limited number of adult snowshoes are available to borrow.  Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children. For the aspiring poet, writer, artist, or none of the above, Ruth Stone’s story, humor, and verse will entertain, enlighten, and inspire. The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will present Ruth Stone’s Vast Library of the Female Mind with showings on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8 at 3:00PM.   

This visually beautiful film uses a clever juxtaposition of archival footage and interviews with contemporaries along with animation by Ruth’s granddaughter to chronicle her life story as a poet, mother, and teacher.  The film captures Ruth in her own words – in her prime and in her later years – surrounded by her loving, creative family touched by tragedy.  

Saturday’s screening will be followed by a discussion with award-winning, Norwich, Vermont filmmaker, Nora Jacobson and the Film Series curator, Jay Craven.

The Woodstock Vermont Film Series will screen documentary films weekly on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00PM in the Billings Farm & Museum Visitor Center Theater through February 19. The 2022-23 Woodstock Vermont Film Series will take viewers on a journey from Japan to remote Idaho, with stops in New York, New Orleans, and home to Vermont. Storytelling is at the heart of the Billings Farm & Museum mission. The Film Series, produced by Billings Farm & Museum, is dedicated to sharing place-based stories of people near and far, engaging audiences, and inspiring conversations that increase connections with each other and the world.

Experience a wintery, after-hours adventure under the moon and stars in the heart of Woodstock at the Billings Farm & Museum Torchlight Snowshoe on Friday, January 13, from 4:30PM – 6:30PM. 

In this fun evening for all ages, guests can walk, snowshoe, or ski around the groomed Billings Farm Loop.  The trail, illuminated by torchlight, meanders along the Ottauquechee River with views of Woodstock, the East End Park, and the beautiful farmstead. New this year, there will be expanded terrain to explore.   

Guests can learn about local wildlife, the history of the land, and the people who lived here from Billings Farm Educators and Park Rangers from the Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park.  Families and friends can warm up by the crackling outdoor fire with complimentary s’mores, hot cocoa, and coffee.   

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children. The Woodstock Vermont Film Series is delighted to bring this adorable, animated shell to the big screen in a fun-for-the-whole-family film.  The tiny humor of this stop-motion animated mockumentary, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, will bring big joy to kick off the New Year with showings on Saturday, December 31 and Sunday, January 1 at 3:00PM.  The screenings will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with writer and Vermont native Nick Paley.
