What to see during the Quilt Exhibition

Bring a picnic and spend the day! Admission to Billings Farm & Museum’s Quilt Exhibition includes the Animal Barns, the Vermont Farm Life Exhibits, the Ottauquechee River Walk and the Billings Farmstead Gardens. Watch the farm animals – cows, draft horses, goats and sheep – in their scenic pastures. The 1890 Farm Manager’s House features the creamery, the kitchen and in-home innovations that were considered state-of-the art for the time period.

About the Judges

Gerald E. Roy of Warner, NH
Gerald E. Roy, originally from Worchester, MA, is a multifaceted artist and expert in the world of quilts. He currently resides in Warner, NH. He honed his skills through a B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and an M.F.A in Painting and Printmaking from Mills College. Roy’s professional journey spans a partnership at Pilgrim/Roy Designs, where he contributed to commercial, corporate, and residential design throughout California from 1971-1996.

He pursued his passion for painting and shared his expertise as an art teacher until 1999. Presently, Roy serves as the owner and curator of the Pilgrim Roy Quilt Collection. He is renowned as a designer, painter, quilt maker, quilt historian, lecturer, and teacher. He offers his expertise as a professional quilt consultant and appraiser certified by the American Quilter’s Society. Additionally, he administers the Quilt Appraisal Certification Program for The American Quilter’s Society.

Marti DelNevo of Williston, Vermont
Marti started quilting over 30 years ago when she wanted to make a quilt for her older son who she was expecting at the time. She became a prolific quilt maker around 2003 when she was able to travel less for work and her two sons were growing up.

After retiring from a 39-year career at IBM as a programmer and project manager, she found her dream job working at Yankee Pride Quilts in Essex Junction. She loves helping people select fabric and work through design questions they may have. After having volunteered for many years, Marti joined the Vermont Quilt Festival board as the Contest Chair. She is now the Chair of Vermont Quilt Festival. Marti loves that she is able to devote so much more time to quilting.

Her late husband bought a long arm for her in 2012—he was probably tired of hearing her ooooh and aaaaah over all the machines when she would come home from a quilt show. Having her own machine, she could long arm her own work and have a small business long arming and making quilts on commission for others. Marti doesn’t focus on any one quilt genre and enjoys designing her own patterns. She loves thread painting, paper piecing, and making quilts with many small pieces. “Maybe that’s the programmer in me that still loves the challenge of putting something intricate together,” Marti remarks.

Mary Derry of Bradford, NH

Mary Derry is a distinguished quilt show judge certified through the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges (NACQJ). Originally from Michigan, she now enjoys lakeside living in New Hampshire with her cat, Bear. At age 3, she was introduced to sewing by her mother, a professional seamstress, which instilled in her a lifelong passion for fabric and design. Mary’s professional journey began in nursing, where she found quilting to be a therapeutic escape and a source of profound satisfaction. This hobby eventually grew into a full-fledged career when she retired and opened a quilt shop in Florida. Her experience as a shop owner led to frequent requests to judge quilt shows, prompting her to pursue certification through the NACQJ. Deeply committed to the quilting community, Mary teaches weekly sessions with seniors in Bradford, NH. Each year they make a quilt together that they raffle off to raise funds to support Meals on Wheels and the Senior Center. Her dedication to teaching and appreciation for the communal aspects of quilting continues to inspire and support quilters of all ages and backgrounds.
